Hydraulic actuator VS air By using the electric over hydraulic actuator we can offer smooth and consistent operation while providing a mechanical hydraulic lock in the event of a roll over.
Do I need to service the hydraulic system? No. The system is a self contained electric hydraulic pack is rated submersible to one meter.
How does the seal work? Once the cover reaches the closed proximity switch it will be securely latched into the six cast hold downs. The pneumatic seal is inflated to 40 psi using regulated and filtered truck air.
What pressure has the cover been tested to? Static testing to 65 psi has been done.
How often does the cover need service? The cover is designed to require minimal maintenance item that need to be watched are:- Excessive hardened product buildup.
- Air leaks around the seal.
- Binding of components
- Frayed or abrasions to the electrical or air lines
- Proximity switches out of adjustments
All of these issues are easily resolved and listed in the troubleshooting part of the manual. The only regular maintenance is a pump of grease every 250 cycles.
What adjustment need to be made on the cover? The only item that needs adjustment is the close proximity switch. It is adjusted by loosening the 11/16 nuts and positioned until the LED on the sensor comes on. This is detailed in the manual under troubleshoot
Why would you build this? Brad and I both work in the industry and just saw the need to protect the drivers from the risks involved. Drivers on the trailers and driver fatigue of climbing the ladders or up the existing fall protection stairs. Every load has the risk of two trips or falls.
Why all the electronics? By using the printed circuit board it is possible to monitor and control features that would be impossible to do by any other means. Safety and dependability was our primary goal. Another benefit is that we can control up to four covers from one wireless remote switch.
What if it won't work? Two manual steps are required to bypass the electronics. The actuator can be disconnected from the cover pin and the air seal can be deflated using the bypass valve.
What if the seal leaks: If the inflatable seal develops a leak it can be replace by removing the top cover. This should be done in a safety cage. Replacement should only take a few minutes. The seal requires no adhesives to hold it into place. Removing of the snap ring retainer is the only challenge without the right tool.
Where does the power for the actuator come from? The control box contains a battery to absorb the load of opening and closing. The power supplied by the tractor trailer will only power the control circuits and trickle charge the battery
Will the seal leak while I am driving in the rain? The top cover has been designed to channel the water to drain on the outside of the latches. Also the seal is only deflated when the cover is open. A check valve will maintain the pressure in the seal even when the trailer air is released or drained.
What will it take to install the pivotal edge? Depending on your trailer configuration will determine where the indicator LED is installed. The Pivotal Edge will be nearly assembled. It will bolt directly to the existing clamp brackets and the control box mount to the existing ladder by drilling 3 holes. 2 additional holes are drilled for the safety switch, Power, Ground and a signal wire from the Tractor and you are in business.
What happens if someone tries to open the cover when the tank is pressurized? Lots of dust and noise but no damage. The actuator is locked out when the tank is under pressure. The seal will deflate releasing the pressure in the tank it will not inflate until the cover can run a complete open and closed cycle to insure the system integrity
What if something jams the cover while closing? The overload fuse in our control panel will Fail. This is a 10amp automotive blade fuse. By Pushing the open button the cover will pause and the LED will be flashing red. Replace the fuse and press the open button it will return to the open position.
What temperature is the seal rated for? -40 F to 150 F
